5.0 out of 5 stars Works great with the iPad, May 10, 2011
By

This review is from: Alesis Q25 25-Note USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller (Electronics)
I wanted a small USB midi keyboard that I could hook up to an iPad (via the camera connector kit) and control apps like GarageBand and various other software synths. The Q25 worked perfectly - it is powered via the USB bus and connects without a hitch to the iPad. The keys are full-sized, and although the action isn't anything special they play smoothly and the velocity sensing is solid. Nice surprise to see that the keyboard has a sustain pedal port as well. Build quality seems solid. Overall, this met all of my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mighty little controller!!!, August 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Alesis Q25 25-Note USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller (Electronics)
I was in need of a small foorprint controller to fit in my studio desk computer pullout drawer. This keyboard fits within 1/8" in height and is very full featured. I wasn't sure I'd like the controller functions being accessed by the various keys, but it works fine and made all the difference in keeping the height down. It's very simple looking, but you can do so many things with the assignments and channels, etc...which are all labelled and use the actual keys as buttons.......Cool Idea...great engineering......space saver......and the important controllers for pitchbend, volume/value slider, octave up/down, and midi access controls are right there on dedicated buttons to the left side. This little baby now accesses the general midi sounds from my Tascam 2488 beautifully, which actually has great sound module in the early version, especially when combined with a sustain footpedal for piano, etc......perfect for my needs and the full-size keys feel fine. I'd recommend this. The... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice controller, may be tricky to get working, February 16, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Alesis Q25 25-Note USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller (Electronics)
This little controller could be harder to get working for some people. I was nervous after reading some reviews about Windows 7 64-bit not automatically installing drivers, but as soon as I plugged it in with the provided USB cable, drivers were installed on my Windows 7 64-bit in a nick of time.

I use Propellerhead Reason for composing music and it took me several hours to figure out how to make Q25 work. I was getting "MIDI already in use" error but I don't have any other software running that was utilizing MIDI (other than Windows 7 64-bit not installing drivers automatically, this seems to be the second most common issue). Calling Alesis Customer Service did not help me. They said that it's a problem with the software and not the controller. After hours of Internet research, a simple registry tweak finally made Q25 work with Reason. For this reason alone, I had to take away 2 stars from this review.

This controller is very responsive and works very well... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars devastating sonic weaponry, August 4, 2011

This review is from: Akai Pro MINIAK Virtual Analog Synthesizer with Vocoder (Electronics)
over the years i've bought and sold quite a few 'budget' (under $1000) synthesizers. the MINIAK (/ alesis micron) is blatantly superior to all of them, despite the fact it's also among the least expensive. don't be fooled by lack of hype, it sounds AMAZING and has a lot of cool features others don't, a spectacular value for the price.

things the MINIAK totally owns:

- excellent SOUND QUALITY. this is a true synth, no ROM based samples, everything is built on a foundation of mathematical soundwaves (sine / triangle / square). the sonic fullness of these basic waves is noticably thicker than comparable synths. the akai (/ alesis) engine is fat, squelchy, can hit hard with humbling force or sound mellow, warm, and soothing, convincingly emulate many classic analog sounds, rip, sizzle, or envelop in complex rhythmic textures like nobody's business.

- miniak's numerous filters sound very rich. you can mix pre/post filter levels in various complex ways... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Entry- Level Synth, May 2, 2011

This review is from: Akai Pro MINIAK Virtual Analog Synthesizer with Vocoder (Electronics)
-Teen using mother's account...

So I know quite a bit on synthesis, and wanted to expand my programming skills. Also, I needed something that I could jam out on with friends, etc. For the price I got, this is the perfect entry level synth. It's not too hard to program, but it has a lot of features that higher level synths have. It has pretty much everything you could want for a synth, and even a micro-sequencer. Personally, I prefer just using it as a synthesizer and sequencing on my computer. The one thing about this synth that is bad, is the vocoder. For me, the vocoder presets were just not good enough by themselves. I had to do a lot of tweaking to get them to sound good. Not to mention, for every vocoder patch, I had to get the analog gain wayyyy higher than it was set. Otherwise, no sound would come out of the synthesizer. Besides that, this is a great synth and for the price right now, a definite one to consider if shopping for one.

EDIT: 2/2/12... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars (Last minute Review) I chose this over a Moog, believe it or not! (EDIT: Another Button Issue!!), February 11, 2012
This review is from: Akai Pro MINIAK Virtual Analog Synthesizer with Vocoder (Electronics)
I know these are all but discontinued, but i thought i would give a good review for those still considering getting one. I bought this primarily as a hobby all in one synth. I am in school right now, and got rid of my gear and wanted something small, and capable (space was a concern, as my old gear took up an entire room in my home). The Miniak perfectly fit the bill. I was an owner of the original Alesis Ion, it was a good synth, but had an insane amount of problems. I really only sold it because of all the internal and external bugs, not the way it sounded, which was really good. Later, i also bought the Micron, it was a decent synth, but i hated the look of it, and the awkward setup, it also had alot of bugs. Now to the Miniak, it is a absolute shame this thing was discontinued, it is amazing, and sadly most people will probably never know. All the major gripes of the Micron & Ion are gone. I could get into details, but i wont, to sum it up, it has all the pro's of the Ion and... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Amazing, March 3, 2011

This review is from: Akai SYNTHSTATION25 25-Key Keyboard Controller For Iphone And Ipod Touch (Electronics)
I had been eyeballing this thing for a while, but I didn't have an iphone. I recently got an ipod touch 4g for an unrelated reason, and within a few hours of that purchase it occurred to me that I should get this thing too. I'm glad I did.

The controller is well built for a powerless piece of plastic (i say powerless because it is not a pre-amp or anything, it does require batteries). I own the LPK25 and the LPD8, and the SS25 is pretty similar in design with the exception of the pitch and mod wheels (drum pads are controlled via the touch screen). There is no on board speaker, and keys played don't play through the ipod's speaker, so you NEED headphones or to use the line out. Get an RCA to 1/8" adapter and you are set. I really like this because I make the noise in my band and it is difficult to do what I do without a computer. This essentially puts Garage Band in my pocket and I've spent many a night on the couch completely oblivious to my wife and kids while I amuse... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars A completely unreliable controller, April 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Akai SYNTHSTATION25 25-Key Keyboard Controller For Iphone And Ipod Touch (Electronics)
I really wanted to like this controller , really. Im a huge fan of NanoStudio which was the sole reason for me buying this controller. I had read some complaints on the nano message board about these not working for no apparent reason but I figured Id take a chance since most everyone gave these things great reviews and talked about how good they worked.

So when my SS25 came in the mail and I plugged it in of course it was unresponsive within 5 mins. What I mean by that is that the sound cut from the headphone jack, keys became unresponsive and an error message saying this device is incompatible came up after replugging it in, restarting ect. Thirty Minutes later it was working again, so I let it sit with a loop running in the background and without touching anything after about 10 mins the sound cut from the headphones , keys became unresponsive and an error message came up again. This is all while being plugged in to a USB for power. After restarting my ipod several times... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Coolest toy I own!!!, December 3, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Akai SYNTHSTATION25 25-Key Keyboard Controller For Iphone And Ipod Touch (Electronics)
Not only does it controls IPhone synths (Akai, NanoStudio and more to come I hear) but it also controls my IPad via the camera connection kit. I LOVE THIS THING! I was not only able to create some very cool sounds in minutes with the Akai app but also got it layered with the IPAD Korg IMS-20 with some pretty wickedly insane results.

My only gripe so far is with the Iphone app (Akai) some of the buttons on the touch screen are to small and at times unresponsive. Nlog will support the controller soon so that is another great iphone synth that should be fun to play with. I will try Nanostudio and Korg Electribe as well and update the review.
